The gentian violet (hexamethyl pararosaniline chloride) in the Blu-Kote will stain everything, including your skin. I will continue to apply chlorhexidine daily until the foot is completely normal again. After two weeks of treatment, the wound is now closed, and only some redness remains. ![]() I deep cleaned the cage and wiped down every surface with pet-safe cleaning wipes, and changed their bedding, just to be safe. If your rat is not okay with being held, I suggest wrapping them in a towel.įor the first week I applied Blu-Kote twice a day after flushing with chlorhexidine. Then I put him back in the cage and gave him a high-value treat as a reward. I would hold him for about 5-10 seconds after applying, then placed him in a tote bin with paper towels lining it so it had time to fully dry. Wear gloves and a long-sleeve shirt or hoodie that you don't mind getting stained. ![]() You basically "paint" it onto the rat's feet. The Blu-Kote comes in a bottle with a cab dauber. I applied the chlorhexidine via a swab or heavily sprayed the rat's feet (I did both hind feet even though only one had a sore), let that dry, then applied the Blu-Kote. ![]()
